Some reports from activities near Mt Bachelor on the Morning of 1-19-12

It is extremely challenging just gettting around the mountain right now.  Attempting to go anywhere that a Cat hasn't been recently gets you chest deep in snow. On skis if you stop your momentum you're wallowing.   The 24hr board this a.m. had 35". Yesterday morning it showed 27". That's 58" in 48hrs!  All of which fell at a hovering 32-33 degress. It's very thick. This on top of the super low density snow of Sun/Mon/Tues. Not to mention the crust that it's all sitting on.  Pits last Sunday showed the crust breaking down and not supporting weight on E-S-W facing slopes. On N facing slopes it was supporting weight but super slick and not likely to bond well with the low density snow. Another big hazard are Tree wells right now. I would not recommend backcountry travel to anyone right now.  It's still gusting up to the 70's at the top of Pine Marten and visibility is minimal.
