Written Report:
I did a short tour on Tumalo this morning and was pleased that it snowed off and on the whole morning despite temperatures above freezing. There was about 5 cm. of new snow at all elevations. On the top of the butte at 10:30 the wind was light with moderate gusts from north-north-east. I didn't see any blowing snow. It was snowing lightly at that point. Visibility and the sky were obscured. The open meadows up high skied surprisingly well with velvety soul turns.

On the way down I dug a test profile on a WNW slope at 7,300 ft. The buried surface hoar was obvious 50 cm. down and 2 compression tests had sudden collapses. An extended column test propagated. While I haven't heard of any recent avalanches on this layer or whumphing or cracking, these test results can be indicative of avalanche activity and we continue to have a persistent slab problem.
