Santiam Pass Area (including Three Finger Jack)
Snow Conditions No Avalanche Activity
Ski or Snowboard
I toured on west, south, and east aspects on 3 Fingered Jack, near and below treeline and on open alpine slopes.
The snow surface was firm and crusty in the morning and on shaded slopes. Slopes in the direct sun softened on the surface and provided some excellent ski conditions. The upper few inches of snow became slightly slushy but not to the point of loose wet avalanche potential. No avalanches were observed.
There are quite a few small cornices at ridge tops hanging over east facing slopes. Be aware of cornices when approaching ridges.
Thin high clouds were present throughout much of the day.
