Written Report:
Went up Ball Butte this afternoon. Started skinning around 2:30 pm. Only went 1/3 of the way up due to poor visibility. Wind was steadily increasing from the South/West. Visibility was getting worse. We changed over to ski down and I approached the edge. About 2 feet away I did a compression test with my ski and broke about a six foot long section with about an 8in crown. It only slid about 15 feet in total but had potential to slid more. Snow very wind loaded and fairly unstable.
