Tumalo Summit
Did you see shooting cracks?
Did you experience collapsing or whumpfing?
DCSO volunteers observed what could possibly be the beginning of a glide avalanche crack on the summit spanning the entire width of the Tumalo bowl. While the crack is about 1" wide at the time of observation, it was deep. While this may be in its early stages, this could release at any time if it is indeed the start of a glide event. Extreme caution is recommended for anyone traveling to the summit, let along skiing the bowl. To learn more about glide avalanches, which are rare here in Central Oregon, visit CAIC website
