Observation Date:
March 26, 2022
Zone or Region:
Central Cascades
Activity:
Skiing/Snowboarding
Location:
Mount Washington
Did you observe any avalanches?
Yes
Avalanche Type:
Wet Slab
Size:
D2: Could bury, injure, or kill a person
Elevation:
6200
Aspect:
NE
Comments:
Several large debris fields in the NE bowl, hard to gauge size from the North Ridge, but would definitely be consequential given the terrain steepness.
Did you see shooting cracks?
No
Did you experience collapsing or whumpfing?
Yes
Great skiing on the NW Bowl of Mt. Washington. Snow was consolidated spring corn with minor sun cups. Low cloud layer and mist cleared by 11am. Evidence of previous (guessing Friday 3/25) wet slide activity in the NE Bowl, lots of debris on the NE apron. Snow at lower elevations felt hollow/rotten below a 1-2" crust that was collapsing under weight but didn't propagate.
