ObservationsSorry for the non-avy post, but figured if anything, people who follow this observations page would be the ones most likely to be in the area where this happened. If this sounds familiar, yes I posted an almost identical post last year. That time, I had a pair of Verts on my pack at the top of the Thayer line on on North Sister… and at the bottom I didn’t. They were never found AFAIK. This time, 2 days ago some friends were up there on the same line, and one buddy was borrowing my newly-replaced Verts. He hit some grabby snow right before the choke, and took a short tumble, during which the Verts came off his pack and disappeared. So, if anyone is out that way and happens to find them, I’d be super stoked to get them back, my contact is jimw at pobox dot com. They are the newer weird-looking ones with a bunch of holes cut out of them (https://verts.com/). Pic is from the climb up prior to The Incident™.
To make this post semi-relevant to avy conditions, when they were up there early Fri (last storm was the previous day) they said the snow in the chute was great stable pow, except at the very top of the line just before topping out at the notch there was a small pillow that whoomphed and settled with shooting cracks as they were climbing that last bit. That particular spot is more exposed to the sun and wind, and has one side that changes aspect (the side that settled) and is right next to a rock band separating the more NE facing summit snow ramp from the notch at the top of the line proper. I’ve seen avy crowns in that area before.
